Re-elect Judi Lehman

District 2, Monterey Peninsula Water Management District

October 2009

The Sierra Club enthusiastically endorses Judi Lehman, incumbent for the board of directors of the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District. Judi represents Division 2, which includes Monterey east of downtown, Del Rey Oaks, Sand City, the southern part of Seaside, and unincorporated County north of Highway 68.

“Judi Lehman has been wonderful in representing our concerns about protecting the environment. She received our endorsement when she first ran in 2001, and again when re-elected in 2005. We think she has been fabulous,” stated Rita Dalessio, Chair of the Ventana Chapter.

The State Water Resources Control Board has just issued a new draft Cease and Desist Order on the California American Water Company (Cal-Am). The order would require Cal-Am to reduce its annual pumping from the Carmel River by 549 acre feet, effective October 2009, continuing into the year 2014, when Cal-Am would reduce its annual pumping by 242 acre feet.

Judi has taken a leadership role in actively supporting “banking” river water from peak winter flows in the Seaside Aquifer for summertime withdrawal. Judi advocates replacing Cal-Am’s old leaking pipes and promoting water recycling.

Please vote for Judi Lehman on November 3. Her re-election is critical to our conservation efforts.
